Winter made an early appearance at The Heights reserve last week as the Mustangs hosted Officer in the final practice match before the season proper begins.
It was cold and wet when the Under 19s took the field but with the ground in great nick we booted three goals to nil in the first term and were never headed for the rest of the game, going on to record a 17 point win. It was a good workout as some of the younger boys showed they are getting used to the pace and tempo of Under 19’s footy. Better players were Moore, Pierce, Harris, Jones, Ebeyer & Gray. Coaches Greg and Craig now have good numbers and a lot of talent to work with so we should see a very competitive side during the season.
The reserves initially looked like being short of numbers but a few phone calls saw Matt Hassan, Will Green, Jack Craig-Smith and Jhi Aitken front up to help out. Hopefully these boys regained their enthusiasm for the game and we’ll see them at training this week. Despite inaccuracy in front of goal we managed to hold on for a narrow three-point win with new boy Kyle Delahoy booting 2 goals. Sam Downie is back after cricket commitments and will be pressing for senior selection while Josh Dymond also showed out. Austin Sutherland and Matt
Hassan got plenty of the ball and big Tom Van Dalden is improving with each game.
Showers were still persisting on and off when it was the seniors’ turn. We welcomed Kane Noonan back from Coburg and Caden Maki back from Eastern Ranges and both showed why they’ve been selected to play at the higher level with plenty of quality possessions between them. Aaron Mullett top scored with four goals while Paul Hagar booted three. We hope this is a familiar theme during the season as these two lead the forward line. Polky was back to his best after missing last week and Michael Eshetu-Mulugeta showed that he may have taken that next step, getting plenty of the ball. Youngsters Billy Batten and Kyle Crosby also did well as we recorded a comfortable 45-point win.
This week the real stuff begins as we host arch rivals Croydon at The Heights in what should be a big day for the club as we play for the Mooroolbark Community Bank Cup. Make sure you stay around afterwards for the Player Auction.
